Charleston was interesting for me. I expected to love the city but experienced a mixture of emotions while there. Great art galleries, exceptional cuisine, sweet little streets with hanging garden boxes and cobblestone streets. Easy to get lost in the charm. Horrific past rooted in slavery and servitude. Many of the structures still present represent that part of the city's history. Still a lot of segregation and a clear economic division within the city. This was one of the first places I visited where I could definitively see the long term effects that slavery has had. I definitely need to go back and visit other neighborhoods in the city to see if there is more balance.
